Go on, go get a job in Switzerland. As if it were that easy.
Working in Switzerland is something a lot of europeans, sooner or later, think about or convince themselves they want. Money, scenery, educated and quiet people, public systems that actually work. And yes, once you’re in, it is like that, at least compared to many countries that fall short, often badly, in these areas.
But you don’t just wake up one morning and decide to come here. In fact, people make huge mistakes. Like those who think it makes sense to burn through years of savings to come here for a couple of months and job-hunt in person, walking around with a CV. That’s a massive mistake that can cost you dearly, just like many other wrong moves an uninformed person can make, killing what are already very slim chances of reaching the goal.
Get-a-swiss-job isn’t just a place where I write about my experiences and what I think. It’s somewhere I want to pass something on, to actually help people make this work, help them find a job here. Because it can genuinely be a life-changing experience, as the English say.
It was for me, and for many people I’ve met over the years. No reason it shouldn’t be for others. I don’t like gatekeepers. Being one is a shitty move. Sharing knowledge and experience is basic human behavior, otherwise we’re just animals, and the world is already drifting a bit too far in that direction.
I’ll write articles explaining, more or less, how to look for, and maybe find, a job here, but also everything around it. Life in Switzerland. Because even if you manage to get a job, you still have to move here and figure yourself out in this place. It’s not uncommon to hear about people who stayed for a while and then left. Getting here isn’t a given. Staying isn’t either.
